Each House in the West Campus House System is overseen by a House Professor-Dean, a tenured faculty member who is the leader of the House's intellectual program, and an Assistant Dean, a student affairs professional who directs the multiple functions of the House and shares responsibility with the House Professor-Dean for the realization of the House's educational mission.
Shorna B. Allred, Ph.D.
Dr. Shorna Allred, a native Texan, obtained her Ph.D. from Oregon State University and her B.S. and M.S. degrees from Penn State University. Allred began her academic career at Purdue University and joined Cornell in 2007 as an Associate Professor of Human Dimensions of Natural Resources in the Dept. of Natural Resources.She is also the Associate Director of the Human Dimensions Research Unit and a member of the Graduate Fields of Natural Resources and Global Development.Her research and outreach program at Cornell focus on understanding human attitudes, motivations, and behavior related to natural resource conservation and management. Her main interests center on how social science can facilitate community-based approaches to planning and management while enhancing the resilience and sustainability of communities both locally and abroad.Dr. Allred is passionate about engaging students in community-based work and leads a global service learning program, Global Citizenship and Sustainability, that is focused on indigenous community resilience.Dr. Allred works in Southeast Asia in Malaysian Borneo and recently spent her sabbatical investigating flood resilience in Bangkok, Thailand.Her teaching focus at Cornell is on community-based research methods in natural resources, global service-learning, and community organizing for the public good.In her spare time Dr. Allred enjoys reading historical fiction and poetry, traveling internationally, hiking and exploring the outdoors, watching pro football, and spending time with friends and family. Joining her in Alice Cook House are her husband, Eric and son, Ericsson.
Her husband, Eric, is from North Carolina, has an MBA in International Business from Appalachian State University, and leads a consulting company that specializes in the international distribution of nutritional products.He has worked in the nutritional products industry for over 20 years and over the last 5 years, he has focused on working with companies to navigate and overcome the various regulatory and market constraints of introducing US-based nutritional brands and products into international markets throughout Asia, the Middle East, and Europe. His passion for health and fitness drives his business and his work has taken him to locations such as Japan, Europe, Southeast Asia, and China. He lives a very active and fitness-driven lifestyle, loves college and professional sports (especially UNC!), and traveling internationally.
